Snuggled high up in the Garhwal Himalayas, in the Kedar valley lies five holy places , associated with the folklore and  myth of Lord Shiva. Panch Kedar refers to the five temples of Shiva, situated ensnared by the Mandakini and Alakananda rivers with the snowy peaks of Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Neelkanth and Kedarnath forming the backdrop. The temples, namely, Kedarnath (3,583 m)Tunganath (3,680 m)Rudranath (2,286  m) , Madhyamaheshwar(3,490 m) and Kalpeshwar (2,200 m), are so remotely located that, except Rudranath , all the rest are only accessible by strenuous trekking usually done in between April and October, as they are closed in the winters owing to heavy snowfall. Steeped in mythology, the Panch Kedar, links its origin to the Pandavas, the heroes of the epic Mahabharata.

Legend has it that, after the kurukshetra war, the Pandavas set out to seek blessings from Lord Shiva, as a penance to the “gotrahatya” (fratricide) and “brhmanahatya”(killing of the priest class). They went to Varanasi, famed to be Shiva’s favourite place. But Shiva, incensed by the cruelty and dishonesty of the war, avoided the Pandavas, and taking the form of a bull, went into hiding. The brothers then went to the Garhwal region in their search, and Bheema noticed and recognized a bull grazing to be actually Lord Shiva, near Gupt Kasi. In his attempt to seek the god, Bheema, caught hold of the bull by its tail and hind legs. But the bull shaped Shiva dissappeared into the ground and then resurfaced in parts at five places. The hump at Kedarnath, the arms rising at Tungnath, the navel and stomach at Madhyamaheshwar, the facing showing at Rudranath, and finaly the matted hair at Kalpeshwar. The pandavas, gratified by his appearance , built five emples at these places and thus atoned for their sins.

The total trek of about 170 kms starts at Gaurikund, which offers picturesque view of the himalayas. The dazzling and enchanting view of the Nanda Devi(7,817 m), Trishul(7,120 m) and Chaukhamba(7,138) is omnipresent along the trail . Kedarnath ranges drain into the Mandakini River that emerges from the steady edge of the Churabre glacier and forms the picturesque Mandakini valley. The Dudhganga, Madhuganga, Swargaduari and Saraswathi are the streams that flow in the valley behind the Kedarnath temple. Also seen close to the temple are four sacred ponds called Retah, Udak, Rudra and Rishi. Tunganath has an impressive backdrop of the peaks of Panchulli, Nanda Devi, Dunagiri, Kedarnath and Bandar Poonch. The Vaitarani stream flows near Rudranath. Kalpeshwar is located in the Urgam valley in a dense forest area. Urgam Valley has apple orchards, terraced fields where potato is grown extensively. Kalp Ganga river, a tributary of the Alaknanda, flows through the valley.
